Ceramic Braces

Clear braces are most popular with adult patients, due to their cosmetic appeal. They are made from tooth coloured porcelain instead of metal and when used with clear ties, only the wires is visible, thus making it harder to tell you have braces.

The disadvantages of the ceramic brackets are many as compared to the metal braces. Ceramic braces are much harder to keep clean, may cause treatment time to run longer (increased friction compared to metal brackets) and the clear ties used to engage the wires tend to yellow between appointments depending on what the patient eats or drinks. Additionally, the brackets are so hard, that if the upper front teeth bang against lower ceramic brackets, the edges of the upper teeth may chip. Because of this, it is always best to use the ceramic braces on the upper teeth only.
